Higher than a kite... in fact, probably up in the stratosphere, slowly coming down - went to the opera today. Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers" - which really ought to be performed more frequently. This was the first time I've seen it.
Oh. My. Dear. Ghods. and. Ghodesses.
And I was reminded, yet again, of Millay's "On Hearing a Symphony of Beethoven" - specifically, the first two lines:
Sweet sounds, oh, beautiful music, do not cease! Reject me not into the world again."
and the last:
Music my rampart, and my only one.

You know it's been waaay too long since you've picked up your guitar when it's slipped down in pitch almost a whole tone.1...(It doesn't help that two of the tuning pegs are broken, and have to be turned with pliers - it was in that condition when I bought it from a co-worker, and I've never had it fixed.)
And you have no calluses.2 (Ow. Ow. Ow.)
And you barely remember the chord progressions to a couple of favorite songs.3
(And I seem to be acquiring Robin McKinley's penchant for blog footnotes. Meep.)
1Not that I was ever any good with it, beyond folk songs by a campfire, but still...
2It would, of course, be easier if I'd use nylon strings instead of metal, but it wouldn't sound nearly as good, y'know...
3"There Is a Ship"4, "Suzanne", "The Great Silkie," "Since You Asked"... (OK, that's a few, not a couple. *wry*)
4Why do I have no .mp3s of Peter, Paul, and Mary?

I can has cauldron! Actually not a cauldron, but a nice cast-iron dutch oven, complete with cast-iron lid. Went to one of my favorite local thrift stores1, on impulse, and there it was. I've been looking for a good one for years, but haven't wanted to pay for a new one.
Also grabbed the DVD of Stardust that practically jumped out at me...

In lieu of content, another meme. (because I'm not up to serious conversation)
If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE. When you're finished, post this little paragraph in your journal and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you. | | Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 | | 7:55 pm |
Who or whatever is responsible for the design of the human sinuses should be taken out and shot.

Happy birthday to pagawne! Hope your day was absolutely wonderful and that your next year will be filled with good things. [Sorry I'm this late with this; level 9 migraine from yesterday afternoon still going on now; strong Canadian ginger beer (think Reed's Extra but not as sweet); a pot of my 'migraine tea' (containing sassafras, peppermint, spearmint, chamomile, some fresh ginger, a few cloves, a bit of cinnamon stick, and a tiny bit of valerian); gel packs that live in the freezer til needed, when they wrap my forehead and top of head; a buckwheat-hull-filled thingy that gets warmed in the microwave and then wrapped around my shoulders; prescription medications, of course, which have me losing my train of thought between one word and the next. Anyway, i'm taking a full dose of the promethazine tonight, that's really really good at keeping my nausea under enough control that I can handle codeine. It'll also knock me flat out, in about 10 minutes. Feh.] | | Friday, December 21st, 2007 | | 8:43 am |
Solstice - "Wolcom alle another yere" I was thinking of the Wolcum Yole section of Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols' (of which, dammit, I have no recording. Not vinyl, not cassette, not CD, not .mp3. How has that happened?)
Wolcum be thou hevenè king, Wolcum Yole! Wolcum, born in one morning, Wolcum for whom wesall sing!

"All knowledge is contained in..." Does anyone out there know which of the Kinky Friedman mysteries has the Chicken McGovern recipe?
I haven't the energy to hunt down and read them all to find it again...
Many many thanks, and baklava or chocolate goodies could be mailed in your direction next month as a reward or finder's fee... | | 12:17 am |
*swears* Doctor's appointment yesterday; mostly routine follow-on stuff. Sort of.
I'm due for bloodwork again; I knew they scanned for liver function because of one of the meds I'm on; didn't realize that they also are checking kidney enzyme levels because of another med.
Also am going to have my first ever bone density screening. Am a bit concerned on that one.
And the mammogram, but that's just the routine, annual, squishing-of-the-soft-bits.
Oh, and the awful pain at the base of my thumbs has a name: de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Not the same as the tendonitis I've had in my wrists since, oh, 1971, and which ended my lifetime dream of being a church organist. (That one involves lateral motion of the wrist, and stretches - runs, arpeggios, longer-than-octave stretches.) (This one just hurts whenever I move my thumb. heh.) So I'm going to be spending a lot of time in elastic wrist splints, and less time crocheting and doing bead work. DAMMIT. I don't have all that much that I can do, or create, and the very act of creating seems to be causing this. *swears some more* She gave me some exercises, applauded my already-owned splints and said I should use them sooner than I do... me being me, I tend to wait until things are really bad before mentioning them to the doctor, y'know?
Oh, and she agrees that the nasty awful won't go away hip pain is probably arthritis; it's just gotten out of control the last month or so... which, incidentally, is when I switched from glucosamine/chondroitin to a less-expensive "glucosamine blend" sans chondroitin. Acquired the gluco/chondroitin blend today, it should take a couple weeks or so to kick back in. Meh.
And we're going to put the antidepressant (Citalopram, which is generic for Celexa) level back up to the full dose of 20 mg, which is still a very light dose. Not necessarily to increase my moods, but to help in dealing with the pain levels I'm at.
*mumble*swear*sigh* Somewhere out there is an 86 year old woman with the body of a 57 year old. How do I know this? I'm the 57 year old, and I've got a body that feels and acts like it's 86.

Name(s) withheld to protect the... um... Wednesday was a severely crashy, no spoons at all day.
So, early in the afternoon a friend came to visit; about an hour later, a second friend called from the ferry terminal. Since I still hadn't done the shower-get dressed thing, I sent friend #1 to pick up friend # 2.
About, oh, twenty minutes later, I was out of the shower and dressed, and wondering where the two of them had gotten to. Then, the phone rang; friend #2's cell number, with her saying "yeah, we've been outside your door talking, we knocked a couple of times."
I proceeded to open the door, with what I'm sure was a thoroughly boggled expression, looked at friend #1, and said: "But you have the keys!"
[The other silliness of the day, to inspire laughter for quite some time to come: Friend #1 reaches toward friend #2's neck, saying "Vulcan death grip;" friend #2 gestures toward friend #1 and says "nutcracker." Respective genders are left as an exercise for the reader.]
[Yes, I've had a bit of wine. Silliness ensues.] | | Monday, October 15th, 2007 | | 11:59 pm |
meme snagged from roobarb - What happens in this meme is, I commented on roobarb's icon post, and she chose seven of my icons for me to comment on. I'll explain them below the cut. If you'd like me to choose seven of yours for the same purpose, let me know in a comment! ETA Also, if someone else wants to choose different icons, I'd not mind playing again. :) ( words, images, and explanations follow ) |
